Marketing Jobs Over $200K
Ft. Beautiful.ai, Cash App, SEMI, The Wonderful Company
Senior marketing jobs are becoming technical and specialized.
This week, for example, among the open marketing positions with a published median salary above $200K (client-side, non-agency roles), 28.1% are Product Marketing jobs. The second biggest category is Marketing Ops and MarTech, at 13.7%, and Healthcare marketing closely follows at 11.6%.
But if we look at the talent pool in the US, among a total of 318,882 marketing directors, only 10,800 hold the position of “product marketing director”, so only 3%.
So here’s an interesting problem: there are too many Product Marketing roles and not enough Product Marketing talent.
Is this a passing trend, or is it here to stay?
We want to understand what’s going on here and how marketers who do not have Product Marketing backgrounds might transition into this type of role.
Stay tuned here!
On the other hand, according to our friends at Aspen Tech Labs, the job market continues to warm up. As of this morning:
There are 24,734 marketing job openings in the US, up 16.4% quarterly but down 3.2% YOY.
2639 of them are senior marketing roles (directors+ above), which is a 3.5% quarterly increase but an 8% decrease YOY.
The median salary for all marketing positions is $84,989, and for senior marketing roles, it is $145,007.
Teams at Aspen Tech Labs are busy putting the final touches on their Quarterly US Job Report, and here’s a sneak peek of what they found out:
There were 5.77 million jobs in the US, up 1.2% from the last quarter but down 8.6% YOY.
Overall, 39 states and the District of Columbia saw an increase in the number of jobs, and 11 saw a decrease.
Now, let’s check out our curated list of top picks!
VP of Marketing @Beautiful.ai
Location: remote
Compensation: $225,000 - $300,000
Posted: 10 days ago
Beautiful.ai currently posts six vacancies – all remote. The Median pay is around $160K. This position offers the highest salary the company advertises now.
The median pay for VP/Director of Marketing jobs in the US currently is $136,458. And in San Francisco, the median pay is $104,998 for full-time positions.
Mitch Grasso, the founder of Beatuful.ai, is a legend. In 2007, he founded SlideRocket at a time when people grew to be impatient with PPT. SlideRocket modernized presentations through a cloud-based platform that allows enhanced collaboration and dynamic presentation, (older readers will remember just being “cloud-first” was a true innovation in 2007)
4 years later, Mitch sold SlideRocket to VMware for an undisclosed amount.
…And in 2015 he’s back again with another nifty tool, kudos!
So if we were hiring for this role, we’d headhunt talent directly from other prosumer cloud apps with a discerning audience - companies with a software brand that has joyful support among power users and big customers alike: Calendly, Grammarly, Canva, Zapier, Adobe and yep, even Microsoft.
If you are in an interview process, ask for equity 😉 And be sure to share your awareness of the founders' previous success in taking a company from 0-1.
The company's disclosed funding stands at $16 million, so showcase how you deliver value in terms of brand lift and sales from smaller marketing purses.
Programmatic Ads Product Lead @ Cash App
Location: remote
Compensation: $263,600 - $395,400
Posted: 9 days ago
Block, Cash App’s parent company, has slowed hiring in the last 6 months, listing 280+ openings right now. In January, the company announced job cuts as it aims to cap its workforce to 12,000 by the end of the year. The median pay for these positions is $204.5K. More than half of their vacancies are remote. They do pay well, too.
The median salary for product lead roles in the US is currently at $191,994, and the median pay for full-time jobs in San Francisco is $104,998.
Believe it or not, Twitter actually had respectable ad revenue before the arrival of Musk.
In 2021, Twitter reported $5.08 billion in total revenue, with $1.41 billion from advertising in Q4 alone. So Jack Dorsey definitely understands the power of ad dollars.
However, there have been a lot of changes at Square/Block. Stay with us and follow closely 🙂
After leaving Twitter, Jack Dorsey rebranded Square to Block and integrated Afterpay into Cash App in 2022. In late 2023, the former Square CMO moved to Intuit as Quickbooks' CMO. Last month, Cash App and Afterpay's CMO Geoff Seeley left for PayPal, while Catherine Ferdon, previously Jack Dorsey's EA, updated her LinkedIn to CMO of Cash App, though no formal announcement was made.
Still with us? 😂
So, the ideal candidate for the role is someone who wasn’t phased by working close to one of the tech industry's most distinctive leaders. Although the role appears to report to the newly promoted Deep Bedi on the product side or maybe GM Brian Grassadonia.
If you are applying for the job, explain how you have created (invented, shipped, marketed) successfully for a new feature of an existing core product without hurting the UserX of the flagship.
This is a product management role at the core, but given it’s an advertising product, we felt it was worth featuring. What do you think? Let us know.
VP, Corporate Marketing @SEMI
Location: Milpitas, CA
Compensation: $250,000 - $315,000
Posted: 19 days ago
Semi has 8 open positions, and its median pay is around $120.6K. Only one position is remote. They also post a Product Marketing Manager position with a salary range of $115-153K. Again, the median pay for VP/Director of Marketing in the US is $136,458 and in Milpitas, California, where Semi is located, the median pay for full-time positions is $55.557.
This is a broad marketing role with events and community twist. So if we were hiring for this role, we’d be at industry-focused organizations in advertising: IAB, ANA, 4As, but also GSMA, who run Mobile World Congress.
If you are applying for the job, or in a hiring process - there are 4 things you can highlight.
how you build loyalty and community [keep existing members engaged and happy to protect revenue]
how you grow membership [drive new revenue] or sell in value add consultancy or research
how you operate in highly complex scientific or technical domain areas
if you are not from the Semi’s semi-industry, your confidence with mastery of new concepts.
VP, Marketing @ The Wonderful Company
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Compensation: $270,000 - $290,000
Posted: 10 days ago
The Wonderful Company has 214 open positions, and there is a slight increase in hiring since March. The median pay is $68.3K. In the US, the median pay for VP/Director of Marketing is $136,458 and in Los Angeles, the median pay for full-time positions is $72,498.
The owner of the company, Lynda Resnick, is a legendary marketer herself: she dropped out of school at the age of 19 and started her own advertising agency, won multiple ad awards like Gold Effie, and ran Super Bowl ads. She met her husband when he hired her for marketing services. Together, they built a business empire.
She is a gifted marketer so might have strong opinions on creative work. And she personally started these two brands the role would manage.
So, if we were hiring for this role, we’d target talent who had experience working in a founder or family-owned business. We’d be hunting from other businesses like Shake Shack, Chipotle, and Panera Bread.
Here are three specific ways to differentiate yourself as a candidate for this role:
study the past work and especially award-winning work that Lynda Resnick has put out there, and learn about her taste from those examples, highlighting any of your own award-winning ideas
Talk about using data-driven insights to inform brand messaging but also the product innovation pipeline. Extra points for Nielsen data wrangling!
Major paid media budget management will play a part, too - they spend 200 million as a group, which is pretty high for a privately owned company.
Some audiences think 4 jobs are too few and there are amazing jobs that do not offer a salary range. We hear you! Here are four more FRESH openings for senior marketers that we believe are the best available in the market:
The Naughty Step
And as usual, here are the jobs that have been sitting on the market for way too long… These are all startups but still no excuse for keeping job open for 203 days!
Director, Marketing Operations @ ezCater - 203 Days
Marketing Strategy & Planning Director @ Uniphore - 174 Days
Head of Marketing @ Last9 - 233 Days
Partnerships Marketing Director @ Pontera - 167 Days
