Marketing Jobs Over $200K

AI in Focus

Marc Andreessen predicted in 2000 that "software is eating the world." Today, the tech sector dominates the highest-paying senior marketing roles, with 38% of client-side marketing positions paying over $200K found in areas like software development, semiconductors, network security, AI, and IT. On the other hand, CPG, Beauty, F&B, and Retail combined only make up 10% of marketing jobs paying over $200K.

The dominance of the tech sector is also evident in CMO hires. Among the 214 CMOs appointed last year, 42% are in tech industries, primarily software development (around 28%)

There's a noticeable shift occurring in the job market.

As we speak there are 12,293 AI-related job openings live in the U.S. That’s a whopping 28.4% increase year-over-year. These include AI, ML, and NLP-specific roles, as well as Data Scientist positions. The median salary for these roles is $161,959, three times higher than the average US salary for full-time positions.

It makes sense for us to take a close look at this booming sector, especially the highest-paid marketing positions: what sort of marketing people are they hiring? What skill sets are in demand? And how do we best position ourselves as candidates?

Before we dive in, a quick look at the job market for marketing professionals:

  • 23,616 marketing job openings in the US, a11.5% quarterly increase

  • 2,730 senior marketing roles, up 5.8% vs. last quarter

  • Median salary for all marketing positions in the US: $84,989

  • Median salary for senior marketing roles: $148,491

Product Marketing Lead, Ad Platforms @ Apple

  • Location: Cupertino, CA

  • Compensation: $182,200 - $328,300

  • Posted: 2 weeks ago

What’s interesting is that at any point over the last 12 months, Apple has the highest number of AI jobs in the U.S. Over the last year, it listed a total of 918 AI-related roles.

Currently, Apple has more than 4,500 vacancies globally. The company increased hiring since August. More than 50% of jobs are listed with salary.

The median salary for a product marketing lead in the US is $145,992, and the median pay in Cupertino, where this role is based, is $147,992.

If we were to recruit for this role, we’d target talent who hold a leadership position in advertising and are focused on advertising for good (useful, ethical).

GroupM for example, has a motto to “make advertising work better for people”. That philosophy resonates.

An ideal candidate should might have spent time in a product marketing role with a market leader in ad tech like the Trade Desk or have worked on launching a DSP at a place like Amazon.

Experience getting ideas off the ground in large matrixed organizations with lots of stakeholder management would be valued.

Apple comes across a very conservative company that places bets very cautiously and slowly so lots of internal lobbying will need to be done to get ideas to land there.

If you are in an interview process for this role, highlight any experience of marketing tech that had a distinctly different value proposition.

Apple’s interview processes are notoriously long, so if you apply for this role, be patient…

Venture Lead, Digital Marketing for SMBs @ Adobe

  • Location: San Francisco, CA

  • Compensation: $177,200 - $302,600

  • Posted: 3 weeks ago

What an interesting role! Adobe is essentially looking for a founder for a mini-startup they are building inside the company.

Adobe is another major employer of AI talent. They had 160 AI job openings last year, and have been increasing hiring overall since the summer last year. At the moment, Abobe lists around 600 vacancies. 21% of new roles are remote or hybrid.

The median Salary in San Francisco right now is $101,400 and for Head of Product Marketing positions in the US, the median salary is $199,992.

If we were hiring for the role, instead of going after big techs like Google, IBM, or Salesforce, we’d look for talent working for companies building tech that SMBs adore, e.g. Canva, Slack, Mailchimp, Shopify, Zapier. These firms strongly focus on usability and customer experience, which is crucial for SMBs and solopreneurs. Valuable insights and a startup mentality are what we’d look for.

If you want to apply, or get lucky and interview for this post, try to emphasize successes in the SMB segment and affinity for the customer.

Again, it’s more like a CEO position than a typical marketing mandate, so this role is likely to receive a lot of applications. If you are interested, don’t just apply, try to reach out to anyone you might know working at Abode for help with referrals if possible.

Director of Marketing Operations @ Snorkel AI

  • Location: New York, NY

  • Compensation: $175,000 - $230,000

  • Posted: 2 weeks ago

Snorkel has increased hiring quite a bit lately, listing 28 openings right now. Almost all jobs are hybrid or remote. The median salary is around $180K.

The median salary for a director of marketing role in the US is $139,994 and the median pay in New York City is $91,270.

If we were to recruit for this job, we’d look for candidates with a strong background in marketing operations, especially those who have successfully used ABM strategies.

Experience in growth-stage (500m-1bn) B2B companies and a proven ability to foster partnerships across marketing, sales, and finance departments would be good to hunt for too. Context is crucial.

Expertise in marketing technology management, process optimization, and data analysis is important - marketing ops roles are getting technical.

If you are in a hiring process with Snorkel, try to emphasize your experience configuring and optimizing Martech, and name-drop any connections you might have with their key financiers or their portfolio companies.

Head of Growth Marketing @ Pryon

  • Location: San Francisco or NYC

  • Compensation: $195,000 - $225,000

  • Posted: one month ago

Founded by some of the most renowned names in AI, Pryon is actively hiring. With almost 40 open roles in the US, Pryon’s median pay currently stands at around $182K. Some open roles pay up to $400K.

The median salary for a VP of Marketing in the US is $139,994, and in NYC the median pay for full-time roles is $91,270.

If we were to recruit for the role, we’d focus on extremely serious, data-driven marketers. When working inside such a highly technical organization, there’s no room for fluff.

We’d target marketing talent who were able to communicate technically complex concepts to a customer audience while keeping things nice and simple.

We’d look for candidates who are comfortable working with extremely technical people, highly data-driven and able to build a growth engine focused on

  • Capture

  • Conversion

  • Engagement

  • Referrals

For a candidate applying or in the hiring process, speak to what your “model” or “frameworks” are for growth marketing. What have you learned and applied from previous growth marketing adventures.

These positions often get re-shared on LinkedIn, making it challenging to know their actual age 😳 .
