Marketing Jobs Over $200K
Data Science Edition
"I know my marketing budget is working, I just don't know which half."
Today, we're exploring the roles that can help solve this age-old dilemma: top marketing jobs with over $200K in Data Strategy, Data Science, and Analytics.
Data Science is the backbone of modern marketing, enabling organizations to move beyond guesswork and make data-driven decisions that drive growth.
These senior, quasi-technical roles are the key to unlocking the power of data, dissecting vast amounts of information, and deriving actionable insights that ensure every marketing dollar is optimally spent.
Today’s list is curated with the help of a marketing data expert, Baldeep Singh.
Baldeep is a friend of Taligence and a data-driven marketing leader with over 18 years of experience at organizations like 24/7 Real Media, PubMatic, Taboola, Washington Post and WPP.
In his most recent role as SVP of Data Strategy at Choreograph, Baldeep developed holistic data strategies for WPP clients by connecting disparate data sets to bring out rich audience insights to facilitate media $$$ performance.
Baldeep provides valuable insights into what the jobs ask of candidates and how best to position yourself in an application process from an industry practitioner’s perspective.
Before we delve into the jobs, here are some updates from our friends at Aspen Tech Labs who monitor, in real-time, more than 8 million jobs across 160,000+ corporate career sites:

Baldeep’s Insights
This role is great for individuals with a Martech or Data Science background—those who understand MMM analytics and have worked on CRM, DMP, and CDP integrations.
You can expect to work on the strategic development of audiences and customer acquisition and retention while optimizing data models to provide rich insights into campaign performance.
This would be a great fit if you have experience working on data, integrating martech platforms, and partnerships.
Strong SQL query building and execution are required to create profiles and validate performance. SQL, being perceived as more of a database management tool, might seem less critical compared to these advanced tools.
SQL may not hit the popularity numbers that say Python does - But in my view - experience with SQL, remains a fundamental skill for efficient data manipulation, mining, and building connections with data, which are essential for effective data science work. Encouraging a deeper understanding of SQL can enhance a data scientist's ability to work with large datasets and improve overall data analysis efficiency.

Again, the median salary for Data Architects in the US is currently $152,734. The median pay for all full-time positions in San Francisco is $109,242.
Baldeep’s Insights
This role is very similar, if not nearly identical, to the one above. However, you would probably need to choose between working for a national retailer or a technology company.
If you thrive on working with MMM with ongoing performance campaigns, CVS would be a good fit. However, if you have media experience but are more technical and have exposure to analytics driven by AI and ML, this would be the right place.
As a technology company, they are looking for people with skills beyond SQL. They have added Bash, Python, Java, Presto, Spark, AWS, DataOps, DevSecOps, data streaming like Kafka, RabbitMQ, data stacks like Airflow, Databricks, dbt, and data stores like Snowflake, Cassandra, and Aurora—that's a mouthful!
Traditionally, companies like CVS and Docusign have outsourced non-core, detailed marketing tasks to agencies or consulting firms. There are several reasons why this might be changing -
The importance of Martech has become more sophisticated and plays a crucial role in driving marketing success. It's no longer just about the basics. Martech tools can automate tasks, personalize customer experiences, and provide valuable data insights. This requires in-house expertise to manage and optimize effectively.
Need for Integration and Control: Having an in-house dedicated martech team allows for better integration with other company systems (CRM, sales, etc.) and ensures a unified customer experience.
Bringing Martech expertise in-house would allow for better talent development and knowledge sharing within the company.

This role excited me a lot. It is not a typical data sciencey type of a role where you're working on structured/ unstructured, consumer data and audience segments. This role calls for the creative problem solvers who use data to find that Aahha! moment. Kind of a mad scientist who is working to break new ground and chart a path to discovery.
Your work will help educate students who are vested in learning data science. What's more interesting is that you would be building various data models that use predictive algorithms to simulate user behavior and forecasts using these models.
So if you are that mad data scientist, you can build a system that can predict a page's search ranking, traffic, and indexation - that is in a state of flux due to newer and fresher content being added.
You are highly experimental and like to push boundaries beyond what can be done to think out of the box and create something new.
SQL, Python, R, and Tableau are not jargon but a part of life. If you happen to have a PHD or a Masters in Data Science, this is your calling.
This is a clear example of the convergence of media with data science, how big data can be used to not just build audiences, optimize performance through meaningful creative, and use measurement to improve impact. But, what we’re seeing here is how keyword data can also be optimized through data science, where companies are looking to build their own models to predict the best-performing keywords to improve each page’s crawl, indexation, search ranking, and traffic rather than being dependant on standard run of the mill data.
Given the rising importance of advertising in the world of business – every company, banks, food delivery apps, gaming companies, etc, is trying to build out ad inventories. We asked for Baldeep’s advice for those data scientists looking to build up knowledge in adverting-related topics.
DS teams are prevalent where there is a need to make sense of big data, and now with data being generated at every connection and DS teams have another industry to lend their skills to. I would think for young DS coming into the workforce look at enrolling into free courses like the TTD Edge, and get certifications from Google’s Marketing Platform to get a foundational understanding of our industry uses data.
On the flip side of this, how about if there are marketing pros who want to build up data science skillsets?
Oh that’s a bit more trickier - this is a whole new discipline people spend years learning. But I don’t think marketing people who have the aptitude should hold back, there are so many courses offered that one could do from home. With the advent of AI and getting basics of understanding how RDBMS work, querying using SQL, one could get started with experimenting.
