When we started running this newsletter, we had a mission in mind - to help people get to the top seat in marketing. We achieve this by providing content weekly about CMOs and jobs in their orbit.

We noticed that our audience has been using this content differently. So, we thought we should explain a bit more how we believe you could get the most out of this resource.

Marketing Jobs Over $200K

We share a list of 210+ jobs with each newsletter. The best way to use this list:

  1. Filter jobs by salary (highest point, median, and lowest point) and get the truth of how old the job post really is.

  2. Follow the money: find out what industries are hiring and which companies pay good salaries. What functions of marketing is the market steering towards? Repivot if you have to.

  3. Identify target companies, spot startups with funding, follow them on LinkedIn, connect with key stakeholders, and engage in conversations. Be the first in line when the right opportunities arise.

CMO Moves

  1. If you are a CMO or aspire to be one, spot the empty seats. Reach out to the CEO, CFO, and CHRO of the company, who are typically involved in a CMO search, and start a conversation and build a relationship. This is what we do to get a retained gig. And it should work for you too.

  2. If you are selling goods and services to CMOs, connect and get into the new CMOs’ network. It’s prime time for evaluating agency services, especially media buying, programmatic, martech stack, analytics stack.

  3. Observe their strategic moves and pay special attention to the announcement of their appointments - what they said and what was said about them at the point of hire sometimes has great clues as to their focus.

Now, some updates about the job market for marketing professionals provided by our friends at Aspen Tech Labs, who tracks more than 8 million jobs across 150,000 career sites daily.

  • There are currently 24,582 marketing roles available in the US, representing a 14.6% quarterly growth and an increase of 0.9% YOY.

  • Among these, 2,717 are senior roles (directors and above), up 0.7% quarterly but down 2.6% YOY.

  • The median salary for all marketing positions in the US is $83,200. For senior marketing jobs, the median pay is $149,999.

Now, let’s look at our top picks, starting with…

VP of Brand Marketing @ Calm

  • Location: remote

  • Compensation: $300,000 - $350,000

  • Posted: 8 days ago

Calm’s hiring has been quite stable over the past year at around eight vacancies per month, and the median salary is $222.6K. In addition to this role, they are also hiring for a Director of Product Marketing with a salary range between $218K and $305K.

The median salary for VP/Director of Marketing in the US is currently $139,994, and the median pay for full-time positions in San Francisco, CA is $106,080.

Calm is much more than just an app, so if we were hiring for this role, we’d look for someone who has brand marketing experience in a company that combines physical and digital. We’d target talent from companies with compelling and habit-forming products such as Peleton, Strava, Fitbit (now part of Google), and Samsung. Peloton would be an easy target because its stock has been down about 70% in the last 12 months.

If you intend to apply or end up in a hiring process with Calm - consider highlighting results in differentiating a brand in a highly competitive space - there was a flood of VC money into mental health apps during Covid, and the space got quite crowded.

Other experiences you might like to highlight could include how you have driven earned media results, built communities, and built habit-forming brand love and loyalty.

Vice President, Digital Marketing (Urban)@Universal Music Group

Universal Music Group is currently posting 85 jobs, but hiring has slowed in recent months. The median pay is close to $79K. In addition to this role, they are also looking for a VP of Audience Growth & Insights with a salary range of $135- $180K.

The median pay for full-time jobs in Santa Monica is $72,197, and for VP of Marketing in the US the median salary is $139,994.

Interscope Geffen A&M Records (IGA) has been a powerhouse in the music industry, but like all major labels, it faces stiff competition from other labels that excel in various areas, including innovative marketing. This JD is obvious in the need for a candidate to come from a major label - so we’d be poaching talent from places like Republic (home to Drake) and are known for smart marketing and brand integrations. Columbia records are known for having a strong international strategy, which is a good thing for streaming, and Atlantic - the home of Cardi B, have been pretty innovative on digital.

If you are in a hiring process with Universal/Interscope, demonstrate deep knowledge of some of their roster. After all, it’s talent marketing. If you don’t know the roster of artists well, speak to how you have marketed competitor artists successfully in the streaming era. Be sure to highlight using data from a wide range of fast-moving sources to inform different marketing strategies and tactics.

The CMO, Alexandra Hinkle, joined in late 2021 via Wynn Resorts. She’s been driving a data strategy in partnership with their Global Chief Data and Analytics Officer, who set up a new DTC and e-commerce approach. So, highlight any DTC and e-commerce experience here.

VP of Marketing @ Veriff

Veriff lists 12 job openings right now. Most jobs offer a few locations from which to choose. For example, for the VP of Marketing position, they listed London and 14 US states as eligible locations.

Median salary for VP of Marketing in the US is $139,994, and median pay for full-time jobs in San Francisco is $106,080, in Jacksonville, $45,094, and in London UK, £38,355.

If we had been tasked to find the perfect candidate for this role, we’d be targeting marketing talent who worked at, or work at trusted Cybersecurity companies, like Sophos, Symantec and Okta.

We’d also consider talent from the marketing teams at Fintechs like Stripe, Square, and Paypal because they manage sensitive financial data and excel in communicating trust and security, which aligns well with Veriff’s offerings.

If you are in a hiring process, highlight what you’ve read about the founding story of the company, which starts on an Estonian farm. Make it clear you care about the mission of the company, not just the pay and the title. And, if you have one - tell your own story about ID theft, to build empathy with the team. There’s a huge potential in an era of deep fakes and AI-driven fraud. So it’s a great company to join.

Senior Account Executive of Gaming Marketing Solutions @ Discord

  • Compensation: $255,000 - $280,500

Discord has 34 openings right now, mostly remote. The median pay at the company is around $194K. Median pay for Senior Account Executives in the US is $110,001, and in San Francisco, where the company is located, the median pay is 106,080 for all full-time jobs.

We have featured quite a few jobs at non-advertising businesses that are making a pivot to advertising, and it’s a really interesting post-cookie trend. In the last few months, companies like Take-Two Interactive, Comcast, Adobe, Roblox, Apple, and Cash App are all actively hiring talent to reimagine advertising within their products, walls, and worlds.

So if we were to hire for this role, we’d tap sales talent from Unity Ads - Unity is a gaming industry play focused on performance marketing solutions, mostly driving app downloads. Talent from Twitch and YouTube Gaming would also be among our targets because both companies have made layoffs recently, and these platforms specialize in gaming content and have experience with integrating advertising. Game publishers like EA and RIOT Games, who make League of Legends have also excelled in driving ad-adjacent revenues.

If you are in the hiring process for this role, be sure to highlight your rolodex of relationships with decision-makers at advertisers who have already been investing in gaming or social platforms.

Despite the layoff, Discord’s revenue has reached $600 million annually, quadruple from what it made in 2020. Rumor has it that the company is considering an IPO.

VP of Marketing @ OfferFit

  • Compensation: $297,000-$323,000

Currently posting five vacancies, OfferFit slowed hiring a bit recently. All roles are remote. The median salary for full-time jobs in Boston $89,991.

This role is nice and specific.

If we were hiring for this role, we’d pick companies that sell products to marketers. They’re asking for a marketers marketer. Companies like Hubspot (might be a ripe target as not everyone will want to be Google and Google are reportedly buying them), or Adobe in their Sensei team which is Adobe’s AI and ML platform, which is deeply integrated into its digital marketing suite. IBMs Watson is one of the oldest Enterprise AI solutions, and there is likely talent there who have taken issue with their ridiculous RTO push.

If you’re thinking about applying - be sure to study the CEO’s content on Linkedin. We suspect a big part of the role will be to take over as primary thought leader and give him his time back, and he’s pretty prolific - no doubt boosted by AI itself. Referencing experiences of putting together a blockbuster customer advisory board is also something they mention in the JD.
